Eshwarappa to resign tomorrow, Bommai says he will come out clean

Shivamogga/Bengaluru, April 14 : The political developments that took place in the state of Karnataka on Thursday, raised the temperatures by a few notches, as RDPR Minister KS Eshwarappa announced to resign tomorrow, while Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, showing full support for the Minister, said he was sure Eshwarappa will come out clean in the investigations. Talking to reporters here, Eshwarappa said he will hand over the resignation letter to Bommai on Friday, adding that he took the decision after a brief telephonic talk with the Chief Minister. Confirming the development, Bommai said Eshwarappa spoke to him this evening and said that he has ethics and was sure of coming out clean in the investigation. “He told me that his continuance as Minister will cause embarrassment to the party, ” said Bommai. Earlier on Thursday, Bommai had said that there was no pressure from BJP’s Central leadership over the removal of Eshwarappa and he will continue to stay in the Cabinet. The Chief Minister had given the assurance to reporters, while replying to a query on Congress party’s demand for removal of Eshwarappa for his alleged involvement in the death of Santosh Patil, who had earlier alleged that the Minister had demanded 40 per cent commission for granting of contract to take up a government project. Patil allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday in a lodge in Udupi, holding Eshwarappa responsible for his death. “I am not under any pressure. It depends on preliminary investigation,” Bommai said. Police have filed an FIR against Eshwarappa, following which the Congress is pitching hard for his removal, arguing that it is abetment to suicide and the Minister should be arrested. Earlier in the day, Congress leaders including Randeep Surjewala, were stopped and detained while marching towards Bommai’s residence, demanding Eshwarappa’s sacking. They were released later. Surjewala alleged that Bommai was acting against the Constitution and Eshwarappa does not not have any right to continue as Minister. BDN RJ
