EPFO Introduces Self-Service UAN Generation and Activation — Here’s How

EPFO 3.0

New Delhi: In a major boost to convenience, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has now enabled self-service UAN generation and activation for employees. Thanks to new digital upgrades, PF members no longer need to visit their office or rely on employers to create their Universal Account Number (UAN). Now, employees can generate and activate their UAN using face authentication — a fully digital, contactless process.

EPFO 3.0

Why Was This Change Needed?

Previously, UAN generation depended on information provided by employers, which often led to errors in mobile numbers or addresses. This meant many employees didn’t receive timely updates from EPFO.

Additionally, Aadhaar OTP verification was mandatory, which proved difficult for members whose mobile numbers weren’t updated in Aadhaar records. The new face authentication process now makes UAN generation:

  • Independent

  • More secure

  • Faster

  • Error-free

Key Benefits for Employees

  • Employees can now generate and activate their UAN from home.

  • No more reliance on employers or visits to EPFO offices.

  • Face authentication makes the process safe and Aadhaar-verified.

  • Once generated, UAN is automatically activated — no separate activation required.

  • Other services — passbook access, claim filing, KYC updates — become easier once UAN is active.

How to Generate Your UAN — Step-by-Step

Here’s how PF members can generate and activate their UAN using the UMANG app:

Step 1:
Download the UMANG App and Aadhaar FaceRD App from Google Play Store.

Step 2:
Open the UMANG App. Go to “UAN Allotment and Activation”.

Step 3:
Enter your Aadhaar number and provide consent by ticking the necessary checkboxes.

Step 4:
Complete Aadhaar OTP verification (if mobile number linked). If not, proceed to face scan.

Step 5:
Enable camera access and capture a live photo. When the border turns green, the photo capture is successful.

Step 6:
Your photo will be matched with the Aadhaar database. Upon successful verification, your UAN will be sent via SMS to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

Step 7:
Once generated, your UAN will be auto-activated.

Step 8:
You can now download your UAN Card from the UMANG App or the EPFO Member Portal.

Final Word

With this latest upgrade, EPFO is making its services more user-friendly and reducing dependence on employers. This new self-service UAN generation through face authentication is a game-changer for lakhs of PF members across India.

If you haven’t yet generated or activated your UAN — this is the best time to do it.
