New Delhi, March 30: Traditional yoga offers various poses essential for maintaining body flexibility and mental peace. One such pose is Parsvottanasana. This asana not only strengthens the body but also enhances mental concentration.

Known in English as the “Intense Side Stretch Pose,” Parsvottanasana is a fundamental posture in Hatha Yoga. It is particularly beneficial for the spine, hamstrings, and lower back.

The term “Parsvottanasana” comes from Sanskrit, where “Parsv” means “side,” “Uttan” means “intense,” and “Asana” means “pose.” This intense stretch targets the hamstrings, lower back, and spine.

The Ministry of AYUSH has highlighted its significance. According to the AYUSH Ministry’s general yoga protocol, Parsvottanasana, also referred to as the “Intense Side Stretch Pose” or “Pyramid Pose,” is a standing forward bend. It effectively strengthens the spine, stretches the legs and hips, improves digestion, and enhances physical balance and flexibility.

Performing this pose is quite simple. Start by standing straight in Tadasana. Spread your feet apart and keep them straight. Then, maintain a straight spine while inhaling and raise both arms overhead, stretching the spine upward. As you exhale, bend forward at the hips. Keep your spine straight and reach for your toes or try to touch them.

In this position, keeping your legs straight creates a stretch in the back of the body. Hold this pose for 20 to 60 seconds while taking deep breaths. Inhale slowly and lift your head and torso, bringing your arms back down.

Individuals with lower back pain, slipped discs, or recent abdominal surgeries should avoid this pose. Beginners are advised to practice under expert supervision.
