
Colombo, February 27: In a thrilling encounter at the T20 World Cup 2026 Super-8 round, England defeated New Zealand by four wickets on Friday. Chasing a target of 160 runs set by New Zealand, England achieved their goal with three balls to spare, thanks to a stunning late innings performance by Will Jacks.
England’s innings got off to a rocky start. Phil Salt fell for just 2 runs, dismissed by Matt Henry. Jos Buttler, struggling with form, returned to the pavilion without scoring. After losing two quick wickets, captain Harry Brook and Jacob Bethel steadied the ship, adding 48 runs for the third wicket.
Brook scored 26 runs off 24 balls before getting out, while Bethel contributed 21 runs with the help of four boundaries. After losing four wickets for just 58 runs, Sam Curran and Tom Banton took charge, adding 42 runs for the fifth wicket. Curran scored 24 runs off 22 balls, while Banton hit 33 runs, including three fours and a six. At 117 runs, England found themselves in a precarious position, having lost six wickets.
However, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed turned the tide with an unbeaten partnership of 44 runs in just 16 balls, leading England to victory. Jacks scored 32 runs off 18 balls, making a significant impact in the 18th over against Glenn Phillips, where he scored 22 runs. Rehan contributed 19 runs off just 7 balls, securing the win for his team.
In New Zealand’s innings, they batted first after winning the toss, scoring 159 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen provided a strong start, adding 64 runs for the first wicket in 6.6 overs. Seifert scored 35 runs off 25 balls, while Allen contributed 29 runs off 19 balls.
Glenn Phillips was the standout performer for New Zealand, scoring 39 runs off 28 balls with four fours and a six. Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman managed only 3 and 15 runs, respectively, while captain Mitchell Santner remained not out on 9 runs.
For England, Adil Rashid took 2 wickets for 28 runs in his four overs, while Will Jacks also claimed 2 wickets, conceding 23 runs. Rehan Ahmed was successful in dismissing two New Zealand batsmen as well.
