Mumbai, February 26: An encounter between police and a criminal occurred late Wednesday night near Adhuki village in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the arrest of a notorious thief.

According to CO Anil Kaparwan, the operation against criminals led to a significant breakthrough for the Highway Police and Reward Team. The encounter took place when the police were alerted about a suspect’s movements. The criminal was shot in the leg during a retaliatory action and was subsequently apprehended. He has been admitted to the district hospital for treatment.

The incident traces back to a burglary on the night of February 16 in the Bhagwati Nagar (Chandrapuri) area. During the investigation, CCTV footage and other evidence pointed to Rajveer (32), a resident of Peepal, Rajasthan, who had been evading capture for a long time.

Around 10:05 PM on Wednesday, police received a tip-off that the suspect was heading towards Adhuki Road on a motorcycle to commit another crime. Acting swiftly, the Highway Police and Reward Team set up a blockade and began thorough checks near the railway line.

Shortly after, a suspicious young man on a motorcycle was spotted. When police signaled him to stop, he attempted to flee and opened fire on the police team. In self-defense, the police returned fire, hitting the suspect in his left leg, leading to his arrest.

Police recovered stolen goods from the arrested individual, along with a .315 bore pistol, a live cartridge, two spent cartridges, and the motorcycle used in the crime.

Further investigations revealed that Rajveer is a seasoned criminal with multiple cases of theft, fraud, and violations of the Arms Act registered against him at the Highway Police, Kotwali, Sadar Bazaar, and Jait police stations. Authorities are also probing his accomplices and criminal network. Legal proceedings have commenced under the relevant sections of the law.
