Faridabad, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated that efforts to empower women legislators directly enhance the quality of democracy. Speaking in Faridabad on September 7, he addressed a two-day capacity-building workshop on “Gender Responsive Governance,” part of the National Commission for Women’s initiative, “She is a Changemaker.”
Birla encouraged women legislators to deepen their understanding of parliamentary processes, policies, laws, and budgets. He urged them to leverage their positions to promote inclusive governance and shape the future of their states and the nation.
He highlighted the significance of dialogue, participation, and trust in a democratic setup.
Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the NCW, noted that the event successfully brought together over 100 women legislators from across the country, creating a national platform for dialogue, experience sharing, and capacity building.
Rahatkar emphasized that women legislators are not only representatives of their constituencies but also powerful voices in education, health, economy, technology, security, and good governance. She pointed out that women’s participation in politics brings a fresh perspective to governance and can inspire significant social change.
She urged women legislators to utilize their constitutional rights and public platforms to voice the hopes of millions of women, ensuring that women in their constituencies are aware of their rights and can benefit from government schemes.
According to an official statement, the first day of the workshop featured four technical sessions focused on leadership, legislative functioning, public policy, and gender-responsive governance. These sessions provided practical information and opportunities for women legislators to share their experiences and best practices in public leadership and governance.
Through such capacity-building initiatives, the NCW aims to empower women legislators to contribute more effectively to policymaking, governance, and public service while promoting meaningful and sustained leadership of women in public life.
The workshop was attended by notable figures, including Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhi, Chhattisgarh’s WCD Minister Lakshmi Rajwade, Kerala’s WCD Minister Bindu Krishna, and Haryana’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister Rajesh Nagar, among others.
