New Delhi, February 17: The Election Commission of India has conducted a comprehensive review of preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, assessed the electoral arrangements during a two-day visit to Guwahati on February 17 and 18.
On the first day of the visit, the Commission met with representatives from various recognized national and state-level political parties. These included the Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian National Congress, All India United Democratic Front, Assam Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal, and Bodoland People’s Front.
The Commission provided all parties an opportunity to express their opinions, suggestions, and concerns to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process. Some parties requested that the election dates consider the Bihu festival. Most parties appreciated the special revision of the voter list and offered suggestions for peaceful elections.
Following discussions with political parties, the Commission held a meeting with senior administrative and police officials of the state. During this meeting, all aspects of the election plan, including EVM management, logistics, training of election personnel, seizure operations, law and order, voter awareness, and public relations activities, were reviewed. The Chief Election Commissioner emphasized that elections must be conducted strictly according to the Constitution, relevant laws, and the Commission’s guidelines. The Commission instructed district election officers and police superintendents to act with complete impartiality and ensure prompt resolution of political party complaints.
The Commission also stated that polling stations should be clean, welcoming, and voter-friendly to provide a positive voting experience. Additionally, officials were directed to monitor fake news spreading on social media and take immediate legal action when necessary.
