Kolkata, May 20: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into the high-profile municipal recruitment scam in West Bengal. The agency has summoned Rathin Ghosh, who served as the Food and Supplies Minister in the previous Mamata Banerjee government, for further questioning.
This case involves allegations of millions of rupees being taken in exchange for jobs in municipal bodies.
Rathin Ghosh has been a four-time MLA from the Madhyamgram constituency in North 24 Parganas and is regarded as a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress. The ED has instructed him to appear at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, Kolkata, by the afternoon of May 25.
Previously, the ED had summoned Ghosh multiple times regarding the municipal recruitment scam. However, he often cited election campaigning and political commitments to avoid appearing. Ultimately, he attended the ED office on May 15, where he underwent nearly ten hours of questioning.
Upon entering the ED office that day, Ghosh told the media he was unaware of the reasons for his summons. However, he did not provide any statements upon leaving after the questioning. Now, the agency has called him again for further inquiries.
In connection with this case, former Fire Minister Sujit Bose, who has served as an MLA three times, is currently in ED custody. Bose lost the election this time from his traditional Bidhannagar constituency in North 24 Parganas.
The ED first became aware of this notorious municipal recruitment scam while investigating a money laundering case linked to the West Bengal school recruitment scam. During the investigation, several crucial documents and information surfaced, leading to the unraveling of the municipal recruitment scam.
Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also initiated a parallel investigation into the matter following an order from the Calcutta High Court. As the investigations by the ED and CBI progressed, names of several influential political leaders and ministers began to emerge.
