ED Provisions Attachments of ₹11.81 Crore from Former Tribal Officer

Bhopal, February 12: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken significant action against a former government official in Madhya Pradesh for money laundering. The ED’s Bhopal zonal office provisionally attached assets worth ₹11.81 crore belonging to Jagdish Prasad Sarvate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

Sarvate previously served as the Deputy Director in the Tribal Welfare Department in Jabalpur. The investigation was initiated based on an FIR filed by the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) in Jabalpur, which included allegations under Sections 13(1)(b) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

It is alleged that Sarvate accumulated assets far exceeding his known income. The investigation revealed that he misused his official position to earn money illegally, which he subsequently invested in real estate.

According to the ED’s findings, Sarvate acquired multiple properties during his tenure in the Tribal Welfare Department in Jabalpur using funds obtained through corruption. These properties include residential properties, agricultural land, commercial plots, and a restaurant located in Bhopal, Mandla, Umaria, and Seoni districts. Many of these assets were purchased with substantial cash payments, while some involved undisclosed cash deposits used to pay off loans.

The investigation indicates that Sarvate engaged in layering and integration processes, investing proceeds from crime into real estate to disguise illicit earnings as legitimate assets, a classic case of money laundering.

Consequently, the ED issued a provisional attachment order for nine properties valued at ₹11.81 crore under Section 5(1) of the PMLA. This action aims to prevent the transfer or disposal of these assets and secure further seizure actions.

The investigation continues with a thorough examination of bank records, transaction details, and other suspicious properties, with the potential for further revelations.
