ECI Launches International Election Visitor Program with Participation from 23 Countries

New Delhi, April 8: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the International Election Visitor Program (IEVP) 2026 in light of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. S.S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, inaugurated the program at the India International Institute for Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM). CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that the election commission views elections in India as a celebration of democracy. He encouraged participants to explore the states, learn, and experience India’s diversity. The commission is committed to ensuring fair, transparent, and secure elections through a mission-mode approach.

In the first phase, 43 representatives from 23 countries are participating, including officials from five foreign missions based in Delhi. Today, representatives were shown a demonstration of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at IIIDEM. They also participated in a mock poll, gaining firsthand experience with the electronic voting process.

The representatives expressed keen interest in the technical measures and security arrangements adopted in India’s electoral process. They engaged in a dialogue session with experts to address their queries and concerns.

On April 8 and 9, these representatives will visit Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. They will inspect various electoral facilities, including dispatch centers, distribution hubs, district control rooms, and media monitoring centers. In the second phase, representatives will tour West Bengal and Tamil Nadu starting April 20.

The IEVP is a flagship initiative of the commission aimed at enhancing collaboration with election management bodies (EMBs) from other countries and international organizations. This program provides comprehensive insights into India’s electoral framework, institutional arrangements, and operational structure. It also familiarizes foreign representatives with India’s best electoral practices and innovations.

The Election Commission of India showcases its processes for conducting fair elections in the world’s largest democracy to the international community. Through the IEVP, the ECI shares experiences with other nations and contributes to strengthening democracy on a global scale.

This program enables foreign representatives to gain a close understanding of India’s independent, fair, and transparent electoral system. The commission believes that such international initiatives promote global cooperation in election management.
