Ebola Virus Outbreak Escalates in Congo, Rwanda-DRC Border Closed

Kigali, May 17: The Ebola outbreak in Congo has prompted urgent measures. The border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was closed on Sunday in the Rubavu district of Rwanda.

Prosper Mulindwa, the mayor of Rubavu, informed the media that the border connecting Goma and Rubavu-Gisenyi has been shut indefinitely to prevent the spread of the disease.

According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, he stated, “The borders linking Goma and Gisenyi have been temporarily closed due to the Ebola outbreak. We will continue to communicate with our people and explain why this decision was made.”

Mulindwa urged the public to remain patient and cooperate. He emphasized that this action was taken to protect public health and safeguard communities from potential infection.

Although the border is temporarily closed, health officials are screening Rwandan citizens arriving from Congo. Congolese citizens are allowed to return to their country after undergoing strict health checks.

According to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the current Ebola outbreak in Congo has resulted in 87 fatalities. The agency warned that this outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain, for which no specific vaccine is currently available, posing a risk of rapid spread.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda has become a “public health emergency of international concern.”

The WHO stated on the social media platform X that this outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, but it does not classify as a pandemic.

The WHO Director-General thanked the leadership in Congo and Uganda for their commitment to taking necessary and stringent measures to control the situation. He also noted the importance of transparency regarding risks to allow other countries to prepare in a timely manner, enabling the global community to take appropriate action.
