Kabul, February 25: A significant earthquake has shaken the border regions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The quake, which occurred on Wednesday, was measured at a magnitude of 5.4 by the German Research Center for Geosciences. Some reports indicated a magnitude of 5.7 in other areas.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border at 4:42 PM local time. Residents were alarmed by the strong tremors. The epicenter was located at a latitude of 36.93 degrees north and a longitude of 71.61 degrees east, with a depth of 90.2 kilometers recorded from the surface.
Tremors were also felt in neighboring Pakistan. The Pakistan Seismology Department reported that the shocks reached cities including Islamabad, Swat, Peshawar, and Chitral.
Residents in affected areas reported intense shaking, prompting many to evacuate their homes and offices for safer open spaces. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far.
Earlier, on February 20, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck parts of Afghanistan, causing significant shaking in Kabul and several other provinces. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the epicenter was located approximately 38 kilometers northwest of the capital of Panjshir province, at a depth of 90 kilometers.
Afghanistan has a history of devastating earthquakes. In November of last year, a quake caused widespread destruction, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. On August 31, 2025, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake near the Pakistan border claimed over 2,000 lives. Additionally, a 6.3 magnitude quake on October 7, 2023, and its aftershocks led to the deaths of more than 4,000 people, as confirmed by the Taliban government.
