Dont Ignore Blurry Vision: It Could Be a Sign of Cataracts

New Delhi, April 9: If you or an elderly family member is experiencing blurry vision or frequently changing glasses, do not overlook these symptoms. They could be early signs of cataracts. Experts provide preventive measures that can offer relief.

According to the National Health Mission, cataracts have become a common issue, especially with aging. Timely detection and treatment can preserve vision completely. Cataracts cause the eye’s lens to become cloudy, making it difficult to see clearly. This problem gradually worsens, and if ignored, it can lead to further vision deterioration.

The good news is that cataract surgery has become very safe, simple, and effective. In most cases, patients regain good vision and clarity after the procedure.

Key symptoms of cataracts include seeing blurry or smoky images, noticing halos around lights, difficulty driving or seeing at night, trouble reading or seeing small print, colors appearing faded or yellowed, and frequently needing new glasses. These symptoms are particularly common in individuals over 60, but cataracts can also occur in younger people. If an elderly person’s vision is gradually declining, it is crucial to consult an eye doctor immediately.

Doctors state that cataract surgery is now a minor procedure. It involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one. The surgery typically takes 15-20 minutes, and patients can go home the same day. There is minimal pain involved, and recovery is quick. Delaying treatment can lead to worsening cataracts and complete loss of vision, so blurry vision should never be taken lightly.

Experts recommend regular eye examinations as the best preventive measure. Health specialists suggest that individuals over 50 should have their eyes checked at least once a year. A healthy diet, including green vegetables and fruits, along with protection from sunlight, can also help prevent cataracts.
