Jaipur, April 10: Across India, numerous spiritual sites showcase stunning architecture that captivates the eye and tells fascinating stories. One such site is Chand Baori, located about 90 kilometers from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. This 9th-century stepwell is dedicated to Harshat Mata, the goddess of happiness.
According to the Rajasthan Tourism Department, the state is home to many architectural wonders that continue to amaze visitors. Chand Baori, situated in the village of Abhaneri, is a remarkable example of water conservation and features a labyrinth-like structure that leaves onlookers in awe. The stepwell is dedicated to Harshat Mata, who is revered as the goddess of joy and prosperity. Its unique geometry and intricate architecture are truly mesmerizing.
Constructed by King Chanda of the Nikumbh dynasty in the 9th century, this stepwell was designed primarily for water conservation in arid regions. During that era, Rajasthan faced severe water shortages, especially in the summer months when water levels would drop significantly. Structures like Chand Baori not only served to collect water but also provided a cool refuge for locals.
Chand Baori is one of the largest stepwells in the world, featuring 3,500 identical and narrow steps leading down to the water surface. As one descends, the well becomes narrower and cooler. The structure boasts double staircases on three sides, while the fourth side features a grand three-story pavilion adorned with intricately carved windows, galleries, and balconies where royal family members once relaxed.
The interplay of light and shadow on the steps is captivating, meticulously crafted to enhance the aesthetic appeal. As visitors descend, the temperature drops, with the air at the bottom being 5-6 degrees Celsius cooler than the surface. This unique feature makes it a favored spot for both locals and travelers during the hot summer months.
Adjacent to Chand Baori is the ancient temple of Harshat Mata, also dating back to the 9th century. The goddess is believed to bring joy and prosperity to the village, making the temple and the stepwell a harmonious pair that adds to the site’s significance.
Chand Baori is also known as ‘Baori’ or ‘Bawdi.’ It served not only as a water source but also as a community gathering place. Caravans, pilgrims, and locals would rest here. Located in Abhaneri village, visitors can reach the site via a route from Jaipur through Sikandra, Dausa, and Gular Chauraha. Tourists can easily access the site by jeep or taxi.
