Thousands gathered in Ujjain for the grand Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal on Papankusha Ekadashi, celebrating this sacred occasion.

Ujjain, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : The city of Ujjain witnessed a significant turnout of devotees on October 22, as the Mahakaleshwar Temple celebrated Papankusha Ekadashi with a spectacular Bhasma Aarti. Early Thursday morning, the temple’s doors were opened with the sound of drums and bells, following the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra.
As the Bhasma Aarti commenced, the atmosphere was charged with the chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal,” resonating throughout the temple complex. The air was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras, creating a divine ambiance.
Upon the opening of the temple gates, devotees witnessed the sacred ritual of Jalabhishek, where water was poured over Lord Mahakal using a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices, known as Panchamrit. The ceremony included the offering of water while the first bell was rung, followed by aarti performed with camphor.
Baba Mahakal was adorned with bhang, chandra-tripund, and roses for the occasion. The Bhasma Aarti attracted a large number of devotees, many of whom had queued since the night before to catch a glimpse of their beloved deity.
Traditionally, the Mahanirvani Akhara performs the Bhasma Aarti, believed to allow Baba Mahakal to manifest from the formless to a tangible form for the devotees. Each year, countless pilgrims travel to Ujjain, feeling blessed to partake in this extraordinary ritual.
