New Delhi, February 16: The family of the victim in the Unnao rape case has approached the Delhi High Court. They are seeking to increase the sentence of former legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was convicted in connection with the alleged police custody death of the victim’s father. The hearing is set for February 19.
The lower court had sentenced Sengar to ten years for the unintentional murder of the victim’s father and imposed a fine of 1 million rupees. The court stated that leniency could not be afforded in the case of the sole breadwinner’s death. However, the victim’s family argues that this sentence does not reflect the severity of the crime and should be increased.
Previously, Sengar had filed a bail petition in the High Court, which was rejected. He subsequently approached the Supreme Court. On February 9, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case and instructed the Delhi High Court to complete the proceedings within three months.
Sengar’s lawyer claimed in the Supreme Court that he has already served 9 years and 7 months of his 10-year sentence. However, the High Court denied bail. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, stated that Sengar is serving a life sentence for the rape case.
Both cases involving Sengar, the Unnao rape case and the police custody death of the victim’s father, are undergoing judicial processes at different levels. It was emphasized that the law is upheld in this country, with even dangerous terrorists and traitors receiving fair hearings.
Sengar is also facing a separate rape case, for which the High Court had granted bail, but the Supreme Court stayed this decision and revoked the bail.
