New Delhi, May 5: The Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the South District Police achieved a significant breakthrough by dismantling the infamous ‘Kachha-Baniyan Gang’ based in Madhya Pradesh. Six members of the gang were arrested following a brief encounter in South Delhi, which included a wanted criminal. During the shootout, three suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to police officials, this operation successfully resolved a sensational theft case registered at the Malviya Nagar police station. The incident occurred on the night of May 1 at a residence in Sarvodaya Enclave.
Unknown burglars broke into the house while the occupants were asleep, fleeing with cash and jewelry. Initial investigations, aided by CCTV footage, revealed that three individuals used specialized burglary tools to enter the home.
Footage from nearby areas indicated that a total of six criminals were involved in the incident. Three entered the premises early Tuesday morning, while the other three were stationed at Vijay Mandal Park as backup.
Based on this information, an FIR was lodged at the Malviya Nagar police station, prompting an extensive investigation. Given the severity of the crime, multiple teams from the local police station, AATS, Special Staff, and ANS South District were formed.
On the night of May 3, 2026, a dedicated AATS team set up a trap near the Jahapanah Forest area along the BRT Corridor, under the jurisdiction of the Ambedkar Nagar police station. At approximately 12:55 AM, members of the suspected gang were spotted.
When police officers signaled them to surrender, three suspects opened fire on the team. In self-defense, the police returned fire, resulting in a brief exchange of gunfire. During the encounter, the suspects fired six shots, one of which struck the team leader’s bulletproof vest.
The police retaliated with eight shots, ultimately apprehending all six suspects. The injured suspects were identified as Nirmal alias Nikhil (34), Ambar alias Davin (25), and Samrat alias Samar alias Kala (30), all residents of Guna district in Madhya Pradesh. The remaining suspects included Kakesh alias Kake alias Gujjar (24), Krish alias Deva (18), and a 17-year-old minor from Ratlam.
Police records indicate that the arrested individuals have a criminal history. Nirmal is linked to four previous cases, including offenses under the Arms Act and charges of theft and robbery. Samrat has been involved in theft and robbery cases, while Ambar, a declared wanted criminal, had bounties of ₹500 and ₹10,000 on him for various cases in Madhya Pradesh. Kakesh is also wanted in a serious criminal case, including murder.
During the operation, police seized a significant cache of burglary tools and weapons. This included a hydraulic pressure cutter, steel bolt cutter, crescent wrench, heavy-duty screwdriver, a Z-shaped iron rod, a wire-cutting machine, four slingshots equipped with approximately 50 stone pellets, and three torches.
Additionally, firearms and ammunition were confiscated, including a semi-automatic pistol (7.65 mm) with live and spent cartridges, two country-made pistols (.315 bore) with ammunition, and a spring-operated knife.
