New Delhi, March 17: Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani stated on Tuesday that the Delhi High Court’s order to remove social media posts related to Himani Puri, daughter of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, marks a significant “judicial vindication” against a “defamatory campaign.”
The court granted interim relief to Himani Puri, directing social media platforms including X, Google, YouTube, Meta, and LinkedIn, as well as unidentified “John Doe” parties, to remove all posts and URLs linking her to American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein within 24 hours.
Representing Himani Puri, Jethmalani emphasized that the court’s ruling clarifies that the allegations made online were baseless and malicious, aimed at damaging her reputation.
“I would not call this merely relief; it is a form of confirmation. A misleading and offensive campaign was being waged against someone who has no connection to these allegations,” he remarked.
The order was issued by Justice Mini Pushkarna during the hearing of the defamation petition filed by Himani Puri. The petition stated that numerous online posts falsely claimed she had financial or other ties to Epstein or his network, which are entirely unfounded.
The petition requested that platforms like Google, X, Meta, and LinkedIn not only remove the relevant posts but also be instructed to eliminate any future defamatory content upon receiving notice.
In addition to the removal of content, Himani Puri has sought damages of ₹10 crores and a permanent injunction against the defendants to prevent the publication or dissemination of similar materials in the future.
The court has issued an interim order for the immediate removal of the disputed posts while the case continues. The next hearing is expected to take place on Wednesday.
