New Delhi, May 18: The Delhi High Court has established new benches to hear the CBI’s appeal concerning the liquor policy case. This appeal challenges the decision to acquit former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other accused individuals.
The court’s decision came after Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma recused herself from the case. The hearings will now be conducted by Justice Manoj Jain’s bench.
On May 14, Justice Sharma issued a detailed order stating that after she refused to recuse herself, she faced a barrage of social media posts, videos, and public statements that crossed the line between fair criticism and criminal contempt. Justice Sharma noted that those expressing contempt not only disagreed with her but also launched a smear campaign against the entire judiciary.
Additionally, the High Court has formed another bench to hear a separate contempt case involving Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Saurabh Bhardwaj, among others. This contempt case will be heard by a bench comprising Justice Naveen Chawla and Justice Ravinder Dudeyja. Both significant cases are scheduled for hearings on Tuesday, attracting considerable public attention.
It is noteworthy that in the CBI case related to the liquor policy, the trial court had acquitted all accused, including Kejriwal and Sisodia, in a ruling that spanned over 1,100 paragraphs. The court stated that the now-repealed liquor policy resulted from a consultative and deliberative process, and the prosecution failed to prove any major conspiracy.
In its review petition, the CBI alleges that the liquor policy, formulated by the then AAP-led Delhi government, was manipulated to benefit select liquor traders in exchange for bribes.
