Mumbai, May 13: In a significant crackdown, police in Jharkhand’s Giridih district have uncovered a high-tech cyber fraud operation hidden in the forests. Acting on a tip-off, Giridih Superintendent of Police Dr. Bimal Kumar led a raid in the Charanbari and Kothahariya forest areas, revealing a makeshift ‘control room’ used by the cybercriminals.
The police apprehended six notorious cyber criminals on the spot, who were targeting victims across the country. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mahendra Kumar Mandal, Krishna Kumar Mandal, Ishwar Mandal, Pankaj Kumar Mandal, Ranjit Kumar Mandal, and Aditya Kumar Mandal.
According to police reports, these criminals chose dense forests as their hideout to evade law enforcement. This strategic location allowed them to monitor police movements from a distance while executing their scams quietly using network signals.
The gang’s modus operandi was particularly cunning. They sent fraudulent APK file links to unsuspecting victims’ mobile phones. Once a victim clicked on the link, the fraudsters gained complete access to the victim’s device. Within minutes, they siphoned off hard-earned money from the hacked bank accounts.
Authorities recovered 11 mobile phones, 13 SIM cards, and five motorcycles from the suspects. These items were used to reach the forest hideout and conceal their tools for committing fraud.
SP Dr. Bimal Kumar noted that several of the arrested individuals have criminal histories, having previously served time in various jails in Delhi and Giridih. After their release, they reformed their gang, this time opting for the cover of the forests. The police are now investigating the gang’s bank accounts and other assets.
