CPI(M) and Congress Demand Investigation into Mysterious Death of BJP Youth Leader in Tripura

Agartala, May 11: The opposition parties CPI(M) and Congress have called for a high-level impartial investigation into the mysterious death of Rahul Kishore Roy, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), in North Tripura district. Roy’s body was discovered in the bathroom of his residence on May 5, prompting widespread public outrage and political reactions across Tripura. He served as the president of the BJYM’s Dharmanagar Mandal and was an elected councillor of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council.

Police suspect that the 38-year-old BJP leader may have committed suicide, but no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary emphasized the urgent need for a fair investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death and to bring the responsible parties to justice. Chaudhary, who is also the CPI(M) state secretary and a member of the party’s Politburo, urged the government to support Roy’s pregnant wife with moral, financial, and social assistance.

Digbijay Chakraborty, president of the North Tripura district Congress, alleged that Roy fell victim to internal conflicts within the BJP. The Congress leader claimed that after facing harassment and attacks from certain party workers, Roy took this extreme step. He reiterated the demand for a high-level independent investigation into the death.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha assured that a fair investigation would be conducted regarding the allegations made by Roy’s wife. In a Facebook post, he stated that he wanted to assure the public that the accusations would be thoroughly and impartially investigated, with appropriate legal action taken as per the law.

In his social media statement, Chief Minister Saha expressed his sorrow over the untimely demise of Rahul Kishore Roy, stating he would pray for the peace of Roy’s soul and extend his heartfelt condolences to the family.

This incident occurred just a day after the announcement of the BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty’s victory in the by-election for the Dharmanagar assembly seat on May 4, raising significant doubts and concerns in the region.

The death has sparked intense political and social unrest throughout the city, which is considered the second most important commercial center in Tripura after Agartala. Party workers, supporters, and local residents took to the streets demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and strict punishment for them. Protesters blocked major roads in Dharmanagar, escalating tensions in the area.
