Chennai, May 8: The path is gradually clearing for the formation of a government led by C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has formally extended unconditional support to TVK as of Friday.
This support was communicated through a letter submitted to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar by T. Ramachandran, the leader of the CPI legislative party.
The letter states that this decision was made under the directives of the CPI’s state leadership and in accordance with the mandate given by the public in the recent assembly elections.
It further mentions that the CPI legislative party, consisting of two members, is offering its unconditional support to TVK and its leader C. Joseph Vijay for the formation of the next government.
The letter emphasizes that this support is given in light of the results from the assembly elections held on April 23, 2026, aimed at ensuring stable, secular, and democratic governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. The party has also urged the Governor to record this support and to advance the constitutional process related to government formation.
CPI leader D. Raja stated that not only has the party provided support, but they have also requested the Governor to invite TVK to form the government. Raja added that the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK have decided to support TVK for the establishment of a secular government in Tamil Nadu.
This development is politically significant amid ongoing negotiations and shifting alliances following the fractured mandate from the assembly elections held on April 23.
According to the results announced on May 4, a hung assembly emerged, with TVK becoming the largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly. The Congress party had previously extended support to Vijay’s party, raising the alliance’s strength to 112 seats.
With CPI’s support, Vijay’s faction is nearing the majority of 118 seats required to form the government, bolstered by the backing of the DMK-led secular progressive alliance.
Political analysts believe that CPI’s move may increase pressure on other smaller parties and independent candidates to clarify their positions in the rapidly changing political landscape. Meanwhile, it is expected that the Governor will continue consultations with political parties before making a final decision on inviting any coalition to form the government.
