Court rejects suspended DCP Tripathi’s Anticipatory bail plea in extortion case

Mumbai March 30 : A sessions court in Mumbai on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of suspended Mumbai Police DCP Saurabh Tripathi accused of orchestrating extortion of angadias or traditional couriers. Last year in December, the angadia association approached then Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale alleging Tripathi, then DCP zone 2 demanded ₹10 lakh monthly to “allow” them to run their business. Nagrale then directed additional commissioner Dilip Sawant of South region to probe the allegations. on Sawant’s complaint an offence of extortion was registered at L T Marg police station which led to arrest of three officers from the police station, they are inspector Om Wangate, API Nitin Kadam and PSI samadhan Jamdade however Tripathi was made an accused later following investigation. while rejecting the plea court held that this is not fit case for bail . Advocate Aniket Nikam appearing for Tripathi called the extortion allegations “fake and motivated” and claimed that since he did not succumb to the pressure of the “mediators of illegal hawala operators working as angadia association” and ordered action against all hawala dealers, the association had falsely accused him. He said that the entire premise of the prosecution’s case is that of “theft occurring at the thieves house”. Opposing the plea public prosecutor Abhijeet Gondwal had submitted to court that the three arrested policemen in the case have said they acted on Tripathi’s orders and that the senior cop has tried to influence the preliminary inquiry against him. He also said that accused was deeply involved in the crime which require detailed custodial interrogation hence his plea be rejected which was accepted by the court. AAA SHK1959
