Counting Begins Under Tri-Level Security in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

Chennai, May 4: The counting process for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections has commenced in Tiruchirappalli district. The counting of postal ballots began first at Jamal Mohammed College.

Representatives from various political parties and election officials are present as the counting gets underway. Strict security measures have been implemented across the campus to ensure that the counting process is conducted fairly and transparently.

Today, votes are being counted for a total of nine assembly seats in Tiruchirappalli district. Key constituencies such as Trichy West, Trichy East, Srirangam, Tiruverumbur, and Manapparai are currently having their votes counted at the Jamal Mohammed College center. The administration has secured the counting site, allowing only authorized personnel to enter.

According to official data, as of May 1, 2026, a total of 25,063 postal votes were registered for the nine seats in the district. These postal votes were primarily cast by senior citizens over 85 years of age, differently-abled voters, and government employees on duty. Additionally, postal ballots from service voters were accepted until 8 AM on May 4 and are now included in the counting process.

As per the directives of the Election Commission, priority is being given to the counting of postal ballots, followed by the counting of votes from electronic voting machines (EVMs). Officials state that each stage is being conducted meticulously and according to established rules to minimize the possibility of errors or disputes.

Meanwhile, preparations for counting at Queen Mary College in Chennai have also been completed. Strong rooms established for five constituencies, including Royapuram, Harbour, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, R.K. Nagar, and Chepauk-Triplicane, have been opened in the presence of authorized officials after being secured under strict measures.

A heightened sense of vigilance prevails across the state regarding the counting process. The deployment of security forces and monitoring arrangements have been strengthened to ensure that the entire procedure is completed peacefully and fairly.
