Thiruvananthapuram, August 12: A cooperative society has taken significant steps to assist the financially struggling Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The organization has decided to purchase a new bus using its welfare fund and donate it to the state transport corporation.
The Calicut City Service Cooperative Society has invested approximately 4 million rupees to acquire this new bus for KSRTC. It is proposed that the bus will operate on the Kozhikode-Palakkad-Muthalamada-Parambikulam route.
Transport Minister C.P. John welcomed this initiative on Tuesday, stating that it exemplifies how public sector institutions can be strengthened through community participation. He noted that this move could serve as a model for other cooperative societies, local bodies, and representatives. The government is actively considering a proposal that would allow cooperative societies to utilize their welfare funds to support KSRTC, with a positive decision expected soon.
This initiative comes at a time when KSRTC is working to expand and modernize its aging fleet. The government has set a target to introduce 2,000 new buses on the roads. The minister emphasized that such community-driven initiatives could play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
The idea for this bus service emerged in response to the travel difficulties faced by residents of the Muthalamada area. C.N. Vijayakrishnan, president of a local cancer institute, initiated this effort after observing the challenges faced by passengers and government employees. The proposed bus service is expected to ease transportation for people in Muthalamada and surrounding areas, improving access to Parambikulam, one of Kerala’s major tourist destinations.
C.P. John expressed gratitude to the Calicut City Service Cooperative Society and Vijayakrishnan for their initiative. He highlighted that this demonstrates the deep connection society can have with public institutions through collective participation.
