Controversy Surrounds New Diwali Market in Alwar, City Officials Defend Initiative
Alwars new Diwali market faces opposition from street vendors, but city officials see it as a step towards organized shopping and traffic relief.

Alwar, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The new Diwali market being developed on Company Bagh Road in Alwar has sparked debate among local street vendors and city officials. As the festival approaches, the municipal administration’s initiative aims to improve shopping conditions in the city. While some vendors have expressed their discontent, city officials argue that the market will help alleviate traffic congestion and promote organized shopping.
Municipal Commissioner Madhav Bhardwaj explained that a designated market for vendors selling traditional Diwali items like lamps and flowers has been created. The city is providing these vendors with free stalls to facilitate their business.
Bhardwaj emphasized that the goal is not to disrupt any vendor’s livelihood but to provide them with a better and more organized space. He pointed out that the initiative was designed to reduce the crowd and traffic pressure in the main markets and thoroughfares of the city.
In response to the concerns raised by protesting vendors, Bhardwaj acknowledged that initial resistance to new systems is common. He noted that people often need time to transition from old practices to new ones.
The municipal administration has engaged in multiple discussions with business organizations, council members, and various stakeholders to shape the market’s framework, taking into account their suggestions.
Meetings with council members from both the BJP and Congress have also addressed issues such as vendor facilities, customer movement, and the market’s impact on business. Some vendors worry that the new market could affect customer turnout. To alleviate these concerns, the administration has ensured that there will be entry and exit points on both sides of the market to facilitate movement.
Officials assert that visitors to the market will not face any inconveniences, and measures will be in place to enhance the shopping experience while ensuring sufficient business for vendors.
Bhardwaj urged residents to shop at the new market on Company Bagh Road this Diwali, stating that he would personally visit to support the initiative. He believes that purchasing Diwali-related items from this market will encourage small vendors and help reduce congestion in other busy markets.
Despite the administration’s confidence in the new system, the concerns of long-standing street vendors remain. They argue that merely providing space is not enough; attracting customers and maintaining business flow is equally crucial.
As the opening of the new Diwali market approaches, all eyes are on its potential to draw in shoppers while safeguarding the livelihoods of traditional vendors and improving the city’s traffic situation.
