Kolkata, April 8: The Congress party released its manifesto for the West Bengal Assembly elections on Tuesday. The document emphasizes improving the fiscal situation, attracting investments, and creating jobs, rather than focusing on government aid distribution.
After the manifesto launch in Kolkata, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge explained the party’s shift towards prioritizing economic development over promises of government assistance.
Kharge stated, “We want to provide new options to the people of West Bengal. Therefore, our manifesto does not mention government aid distribution. Instead, it focuses on rebuilding and reforming the state’s economy.”
He launched a sharp critique against both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress, placing them in the same category, despite the Trinamool Congress still being part of the Congress-led Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance.
Kharge noted, “In the past, discussions about industry revolved around Kolkata. Now, the youth of West Bengal are migrating to Maharashtra, Chennai, and Hyderabad. The situation in West Bengal is dire. Young men and women are wandering without jobs after obtaining their degrees. The current government lacks a plan. The BJP ignores these issues, focusing only on inciting riots between Hindus and Muslims. Hence, we are presenting a third option in West Bengal.”
He also highlighted cases of corruption within the state administration, mentioning that nearly 50 crore rupees were seized from a state minister’s residence. “West Bengal needs to move towards the rule of law,” he added.
Echoing Kharge’s sentiments, senior Congress leader and head of the party’s media cell, Jairam Ramesh, stated that the people of West Bengal are caught between the corruption of the Trinamool Congress and the divisive politics of the BJP, which is why they need an alternative.
