Congress Plans Mock Parliament to Demand Impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner
The Congress-led opposition is set to hold a mock parliament to discuss impeaching the Chief Election Commissioner over alleged irregularities.

New Delhi, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : The Congress-led opposition is gearing up to hold a mock parliament on Friday to protest against what they call arbitrary decisions by the Election Commission (EC) and irregularities in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process. They are demanding the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to reports, the symbolic parliamentary session will take place at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Opposition MPs will express their views in a public forum and subsequently vote in favor of the CEC’s impeachment.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside over the mock session, where opposition MPs will argue for the impeachment of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Kharge emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about the issues at hand, stating that movements are essential for democracy. He accused the Congress government and the Election Commission of collusion.
While the initiative may be symbolic, the opposition believes it reflects deep public sentiment and dissatisfaction regarding widespread electoral irregularities.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas remarked that the mock parliament is a reflection of the people’s aspirations and demands, rather than a mere publicity stunt. He elaborated that the India Block intends to formally impeach the current Chief Election Commissioner in a public forum, asserting that the ruling party has consistently ignored and suppressed the opposition’s voice.
Brittas told reporters, “This will reflect the public’s expectations. We will have a formal impeachment process with a presiding officer. Meira Kumar will chair this mock parliament, and representatives from various parties will present their views.”
He further detailed that the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, will introduce the proposal, while Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will conclude the discussion. Representatives from civil society and victims of the SIR process will also participate to present their testimonies.
