Chennai, May 6: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram stated on Wednesday that the party is actively shaping the will of the people in Tamil Nadu regarding the upcoming assembly elections.
His remarks followed Congress’s formal announcement of support for actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the next government in Tamil Nadu. This support is contingent upon keeping “communal forces” at bay. Congress has characterized the election results as a strong mandate for a “secular, progressive, and welfare-oriented government” based on constitutional values. No party has achieved an outright majority in the state, although TVK has secured victories in 108 seats.
Karti Chidambaram emphasized, “The people of Tamil Nadu have given a mandate for change. This mandate is against the DMK and AIADMK alliances. They have clearly expressed their support for Vijay and a government led by TVK.”
However, he noted that the public has not granted a mandate to any single party.
Chidambaram added, “The people have said to Vijay, ‘Go ahead and form the government,’ but please include some other parties for a majority and a stable government, which Vijay is doing.”
He further stated, “Vijay respects the mandate of the Tamil Nadu people. He is reaching out to political parties, saying, ‘I am the largest party here; the public has voted for me to form the government. But for a stable and secular government, I need the cooperation of other political parties. I seek your support.’”
Karti Chidambaram clarified that Congress is merely responding to TVK’s outreach. He said, “What we are doing now is shaping and materializing the decision of the Tamil Nadu people. We do not want any form of communal forces in the government. We are very clear that we want a stable and secular government and will support a secular and stable government in Tamil Nadu. Thus, it is evident that parties desire long-term relationships, which is clearly articulated in our letter of support.”
