Chhatarpur, May 18: On Monday evening, unknown assailants opened fire on the vehicle of Congress leader Halke Raja near Imaliya Tiraaha in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, leaving him seriously injured.
Police suspect that the attack may be linked to ongoing political and electoral rivalries. The incident occurred in the Vikrampur village area of the Rajnagar police station when Raja was returning to his ancestral village in a Bolero vehicle.
According to family members, a group of armed individuals blocked the vehicle and launched a violent attack. Abhay Raj Singh Bundela, Raja’s nephew, claimed that seven to eight attackers in two to three vehicles surrounded the Bolero and opened fire indiscriminately.
Bundela reported that approximately six to seven bullets were fired at the vehicle. The attackers also assaulted them with a baseball bat before fleeing the scene. Halke Raja sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his legs, thighs, and shoulders.
He was initially taken to a local hospital and later referred to Gwalior due to his critical condition. Anirudh Chaturvedi, who is overseeing his treatment, stated that the Congress leader was admitted with severe gunshot injuries.
Chaturvedi mentioned, “He has gunshot wounds in his hands and legs. A team of doctors is treating him in the intensive care unit, and a surgical procedure is currently underway.”
The family has named Lokpal Singh Bundela, Virendra Singh Bundela, and Satyam Singh, all residents of the same village, as suspects in the case. They alleged that the accused are linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party and that the attack stems from a long-standing political feud related to local elections.
Police officials confirmed that the motive behind the attack is under investigation, although initial inquiries suggest it was rooted in an old rivalry. Chhatarpur Superintendent of Police Rajat Saklecha stated that police teams have collected evidence from the scene and launched a search operation to apprehend the suspects.
Saklecha added, “Preliminary investigations indicate that this incident is connected to a previous dispute. We have gathered evidence from the site and formed teams to capture the accused.”
He further stated that an FIR will be filed soon, and strict action will be taken against those involved in the incident. In response to rising tensions in the area, security has been heightened in Vikrampur village and surrounding regions.
