Congress Leader Pawan Khera Granted Conditional Anticipatory Bail by Supreme Court

New Delhi, May 1: Congress leader Pawan Khera has received significant relief from the Supreme Court. On Friday, the apex court granted him conditional anticipatory bail. The court made it clear that Khera must fully cooperate with the investigation and must appear at the relevant police station whenever summoned.

The court also instructed that Khera should not tamper with or influence any evidence in the case. Additionally, he is prohibited from leaving the country without permission from a competent court. The Supreme Court has granted the trial court the authority to impose further conditions if necessary.

In its order, the court clarified that the documents and facts mentioned while considering the bail application will not affect the final decision of the case. The trial court will proceed independently, unaffected by these comments.

A hearing in this matter took place on April 30. Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.S. Chandurkar reserved their decision after hearing arguments from both sides, leading to the issuance of this order.

Pawan Khera had alleged that the wife of Assam’s Chief Minister possesses multiple passports and has undisclosed assets abroad. Following these allegations, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma filed a criminal case against Khera and others at the Guwahati Crime Branch under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

It is noteworthy that Khera challenged the Guwahati High Court’s order denying anticipatory bail in the Supreme Court on April 24. Previously, the Telangana High Court had granted him seven days of transit anticipatory bail, but the Supreme Court imposed a stay on this relief at the request of Assam police, directing him to approach the Guwahati High Court.

With the Supreme Court’s recent decision, Pawan Khera has been relieved from the threat of arrest, but the hearing and investigation into the case will continue.
