Alappuzha, April 4: Ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections, the Congress party has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission and police against a media TV channel supported by the CPI(M).
The Congress alleges that the channel aired a morphed and defamatory image of its General Secretary and MP, K.C. Venugopal.
Abhishek Singhvi, Chairman of the Congress Legal Cell, filed the complaint with the Election Commission, stating that the image was digitally altered to make it appear as though Venugopal was accepting money. The complaint also claims that a green circle was deliberately added to the image to reinforce a misleading narrative and influence public perception.
The Congress views this incident as a calculated attempt to tarnish Venugopal’s image before the elections. The party asserts that disseminating such content violates the code of conduct and undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
Singhvi has urged the Election Commission to initiate an immediate investigation and take strict action against those responsible. He also called for the removal of the fake image from all social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and X.
Meanwhile, A.A. Shukoor, the state vice president of Congress, has also filed a complaint with the Alappuzha North police. This complaint includes allegations of forgery, inciting discord, and criminal conspiracy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as a reference to Section 66 of the IT Act.
Shukoor emphasized that this incident is part of a larger conspiracy to derail the democratic process and damage the reputation of opposition leaders. He made it clear that Congress will vigorously pursue this matter on both legal and political fronts.
It is noteworthy that voting for 140 seats in Kerala is scheduled for April 9.
