Congress Accuses Election Commission of Bias Amid Growing Public Distrust

New Delhi, April 24: On Friday, the Congress party intensified its criticism of the Election Commission of India, alleging bias that undermines public trust in the electoral process. AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal indicated plans for a nationwide campaign to highlight the Commission’s actions.

Venugopal stated that the Commission’s conduct is pushing the country towards a situation where the credibility of elections is in question. He accused the Commission of clear discrimination against political parties, claiming it has effectively become a department of the BJP.

Citing recent decisions, he noted that the Commission granted Prime Minister Narendra Modi a clean chit despite alleged violations of the code of conduct, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge received an immediate notice demanding a response within 24 hours, which he termed an unfounded case.

He emphasized that such selective actions would be presented to the public. Venugopal also accused the Commission of inaction regarding complaints against the Prime Minister and mentioned that the opposition is considering the possibility of impeachment proceedings against the Election Commissioner.

He expressed serious concern over the Commission’s silence regarding alleged violations in the Prime Minister’s parliamentary speeches. Discussing Kerala, Venugopal highlighted the party’s worries about a lack of transparency in electoral processes.

He referenced an incident in Kozhikode, noting that there has been no response to the complaint. He further stated that the party is contemplating approaching the High Court, as similar incidents are emerging from other parts of the state.

In a sharp political jab, Venugopal accused the Prime Minister of capitulating before former U.S. President Donald Trump. He argued that Modi’s silence on Trump’s alleged comments that insulted India is a disgrace to national dignity, reflecting the same attitude in current India-U.S. trade relations.
