Raipur, February 2: Communal violence in Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh has led to serious unrest and injuries to several police officers. The violent clash occurred on Sunday evening in Dutkaiya village under Fingeshwar police station, involving two communities.
Following the incident, heavy police deployment was made to control the situation, with strict surveillance across the village.
The violence erupted after three men – Arif, Salim, and Imran – who were recently released on bail in a one-year-old case related to vandalism of a temple idol, allegedly attacked several villagers.
Police and locals said the accused targeted 4 to 6 youths from the village and nearby areas. The attacks involved rods, stones, and other weapons, leaving victims seriously injured. Villagers accused the trio of repeatedly threatening and harassing witnesses in the temple desecration case.
Angry villagers surrounded the homes of Arif and his associates, setting them on fire. Reports also say multiple houses and vehicles were torched during the chaos.
As the situation worsened, police officers trying to intervene were pelted with stones and bricks, resulting in at least six officers being injured, some requiring hospital treatment.
Gariaband Superintendent of Police Vedvrat Sirmaur confirmed the re-arrest of the three accused and said multiple cases have been filed against them. He emphasized that additional police forces, including reinforcements, have been deployed to prevent further escalation.
On Monday, the village resembled a security camp with police stationed at every corner. Authorities said the situation is now stable and under control, but monitoring continues to avoid any recurrence.
Officials appealed to residents to cooperate and avoid spreading rumors to maintain peace in the rural area.
