Bhopal, 9 December (Daily Kiran) – Madhya Pradesh is experiencing severe cold due to icy winds blowing from the snowy hills of northern India. The entire state is under the grip of a harsh cold wave that has persisted for several days. On Monday, the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 4.2 degrees Celsius in Kalyanpur, Shahdol. According to the meteorological department, the cold wave will continue to affect many districts of the state for the next three days.
The weather department has issued a cold wave alert for Bhopal, Indore, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Sehore, Shajapur, Jabalpur, Seoni, and Shahdol, while a cold day warning has been given for Narsinghpur. Temperatures in several cities may fall below 5 degrees Celsius.
The impact of the cold wave is also felt during the day in cities like Bhopal and Indore. Cold winds have been blowing in Bhopal for the past four days. Meteorologists explain that a western disturbance is currently active as an upper-level cyclonic circulation over central northern Pakistan. Additionally, a subtropical western jet stream is blowing at a speed of 213 km/h at an altitude of 12.6 kilometres above northeastern India. The weather centre states that the weather in Madhya Pradesh will remain similar for the next four days, with minimum temperatures likely to drop further while maximum temperatures will see little change.
Weather scientist Divya E Surendran said the main reason for increasing cold is the western disturbance stalled over northern Pakistan and nearby areas at an altitude of 3.1 kilometres. Another weak western disturbance is expected to affect the western Himalayan region from 13 December. Its impact may change wind directions and cause a slight rise in temperatures, but cold conditions are likely to continue in most districts until 11 December.
On Tuesday, the cold wave will continue in Bhopal, Indore, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Sehore, Shajapur, Jabalpur, Seoni, and Shahdol, while Narsinghpur will experience a cold day. Many cities may see temperatures drop below 5 degrees Celsius. On Monday, Kalyanpur in Shahdol was the coldest place with 4.2 degrees Celsius. The state’s only hill station, Pachmarhi, recorded 5.2 degrees Celsius.
Other temperatures recorded were 5.6 degrees in Umaria, 6 degrees in Rajgarh, 6.5 degrees in Naugaon, 7 degrees in Raisen, 7.4 degrees in Khajuraho, 7.5 degrees in Rewa, 7.8 degrees in Malajkhand, and 7.9 degrees in Mandla. Shivpuri recorded 8 degrees, Betul and Satna 8.2 degrees, Damoh 8.6 degrees, Narsinghpur 9 degrees, Chhindwara 9.2 degrees, Khandwa and Sidhi 9.4 degrees, and Guna 9.8 degrees Celsius.
