Coaching Student Suicide In Kota Hostel, Third Student Suicide First 17 Days Of 2025
Kota, January 17 In a tragic incident, an 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Odisha, Abhijeet Giri, was found dead in his hostel room in Kota’s Ambedkar Colony. The incident marks the third student suicide in Kota within the first 17 days of 2025.
Details of the Incident
According to Vigyan Nagar police, Abhijeet had been living at the Jain Villa Residency hostel since April 2024 while preparing for the NEET examination. He was a student of a reputed coaching institute in Kota.
Late Thursday evening, hostel staff reported that Abhijeet had not responded when a meal delivery person knocked on his door. Concerned, fellow students and the hostel manager broke open the door to find him hanging from the ceiling fan.
Key Facts:
- Victim’s Background: Abhijeet hailed from Odisha and was a dedicated student with no apparent signs of stress or depression, as per the hostel authorities.
- Circumstances: The ceiling fan lacked a “hanging device,” commonly installed to prevent suicides, raising concerns about its absence.
- Response: The body was taken to MBS Hospital’s mortuary. Police informed the victim’s family and are awaiting their arrival for the post-mortem examination.
Statements from Authorities and Hostel Owner
- Police Statement: Lal Singh Tanwar, Duty Officer at Vigyan Nagar Police Station, mentioned, “The exact reason for the suicide remains unknown. The investigation is ongoing, and a report will be prepared after the post-mortem and discussions with the family.”
- Hostel Owner Rajendra Jain: “Abhijeet was diligent and regularly attended classes. Just a day before, he assured me he would stay for another month and seemed in good spirits.”
Rising Concern of Student Suicides in Kota
Kota, known as India’s coaching hub, has seen three student suicides in January 2025 alone:
- January 7th: A student preparing for JEE ended his life.
- January 8th: Another NEET aspirant died by suicide.
- January 16th: Abhijeet Giri’s case adds to the alarming trend.
The absence of mental health support mechanisms and the pressure of competitive exams have frequently been blamed for the high suicide rates among students in the city.
Need for Preventive Measures
Kota authorities and coaching institutions have been criticized for their lack of effective intervention strategies. Some steps under consideration include:
- Mandatory Psychological Counseling: Regular mental health checks for students.
- Strict Implementation of Hanging Devices: Ensuring that all hostel rooms are equipped with anti-suicide devices.
- Parental Engagement: Involving parents in a student’s progress and emotional well-being.
