Chinmay Sutar Makes History with 400 Runs in Ranji Trophy Match

Chinmay Sutar becomes the second Indian to score 400 runs in a Ranji Trophy match, showcasing a remarkable performance in Dimapur.

Dimapur, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : Chinmay Sutar has etched his name in the history of Indian cricket by becoming only the second player to score 400 runs in a single inning of a Ranji Trophy match. The remarkable feat occurred during a Plate Group match against Nagaland at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima. Playing in just his second first-class match, Sutar remained unbeaten on 400 runs, hitting 46 fours and 7 sixes off 517 balls.

This achievement places Sutar among an elite group of only ten players worldwide who have scored 400 or more runs in a first-class inning. Legendary cricketers like Brian Lara and Don Bradman are part of this prestigious list. Lara’s record includes an unbeaten 501 runs against Durham in June 1994 and another unbeaten 400 against England in April 2004.

Sutar’s innings surpassed the previous highest score in the tournament’s history, set by Prithvi Shaw with 379 runs. The record for the highest individual score remains with Bhau Saheb Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 runs against Kathiawar in 1948-49.

During the match, Sutar was on 392 runs at the tea break and reached the 400-run mark in the 155th over. Following his milestone, Mizoram declared their innings at 581 for 9, having lost 9 wickets while Sutar was batting on 231 runs. He formed a crucial partnership with Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak, adding 189 runs for the tenth wicket, which significantly shifted the momentum away from Nagaland. By the end of the second day, Nagaland had managed to score 50 runs for the loss of one wicket.

This partnership is now recorded as the third-largest for the last wicket in Ranji Trophy history, just short of the 233-run record set by Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh for Delhi against Mumbai in the 1991-92 season.

Having received a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association, Sutar made his Ranji debut for Mizoram last week against Manipur after an impressive performance in the local Mumbai league and the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season.
