Beijing, 2 January: Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Chang Xiaokang recently addressed questions from journalists regarding the international response to the ‘Justice Mission-2025’ military exercise.
A journalist asked about the recent exercise conducted by the Eastern Theatre Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), in light of claims by Lai Ching-te that the drill has created uncertainty and risks for regional stability. The United States, Japan, Australia, the Philippines, the European Union and other nations have reportedly criticised the exercise. The question also included hopes that mainland China will exercise restraint and oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
Chang Xiaokang responded that the Eastern Theatre Command successfully carried out the ‘Justice Mission-2025’ exercise, which rigorously tested the integrated joint combat capabilities of the PLA. The exercise clearly demonstrated the army’s strong ability to counter ‘Taiwan independence’, promote reunification, and resist interference. It signalled firm opposition to any hostile cross-border provocations on the Taiwan issue, underscoring that any attempts to obstruct China’s reunification will fail.
He emphasised that Taiwan is an integral part of China’s territory and that the Taiwan issue is a purely internal matter with no tolerance for external interference. The PLA’s anti-separatist and anti-intervention operations surrounding Taiwan are entirely legitimate, necessary, and indisputable. The greatest reality of the Taiwan Strait is that both sides belong to one China, and the biggest threat to peace and stability in the strait is separatist activities aimed at ‘Taiwan independence’ supported by external forces.
