London, May 9: China has showcased an impressive performance, securing a spot in the semifinals of the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championship. They avenged their earlier group stage loss by defeating South Korea 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
World number one player Wang Chuqin played a crucial role in this victory. He faced Oh Jun-sung in a tightly contested match that extended to five games. Wang had a favorable head-to-head record of 3-1 against Jun-sung, with his only loss occurring in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles at the 2024 Asian Championships. Wang won the first game 11-9 and followed it up with a dominant 11-1 victory in the second game, taking an early lead.
However, South Korea’s young player Oh Jun-sung made a remarkable comeback, winning the third and fourth games, pushing the match to a decisive fifth game. In the final game, Wang utilized his experience effectively, clinching the win 11-7 and giving China a 1-0 lead.
In the second match, Lin Shidong defeated Zhang Woo-jin in straight games with scores of 11-3, 13-11, and 11-8. The third match saw Liang Jingkun secure the victory against N Jae-hyun, winning 11-7, 11-5, and 15-13, solidifying China’s 3-0 triumph.
The women’s team also delivered an outstanding performance, defeating South Korea 3-0 to secure their semifinal spot. World number one player Sun Yingsha faced a tough challenge in the second match but made a remarkable comeback to win. After winning the first game, she lost the next two and was trailing in the fourth game. However, she rallied to win 10 consecutive points, leveling the match, and ultimately won the decisive game 11-9. Earlier in the day, Japan defeated Ukraine 3-0, securing their place in the women’s semifinals, where they will face Germany.
