Chennai, February 25: The assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry are scheduled for April and May. In this context, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar is set to embark on a crucial two-day visit to Puducherry and Tamil Nadu to review election preparations.
According to reports, Gyanesh Kumar will arrive in Puducherry on Wednesday around 2 PM. He will hold discussions with senior officials, including Chief Secretary Sharath Chauhan and Director General of Police Shalini Singh.
The discussions will primarily focus on security arrangements, logistical preparations, and measures to ensure free and fair elections in the Union Territory.
Ahead of the CEC’s visit, the Puducherry police convened a meeting on Tuesday with representatives of recognized political parties to discuss election-related security protocols and enforcement measures.
This meeting, chaired by DIG Sathya Sundaram, included participation from senior police officials. They reviewed various aspects of election security, including law and order management, monitoring sensitive polling booths, deployment plans, and adherence to the model code of conduct.
The Chief Election Commission is also expected to engage with representatives of recognized political parties in Puducherry to gather feedback on electoral arrangements and address any concerns.
Following his visit to Puducherry, Gyanesh Kumar will travel to Tamil Nadu on Thursday and Friday, accompanied by seven Deputy Election Commissioners.
On February 26, he will meet with Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik and senior election officials in Chennai to assess the state’s preparations.
On February 27, the Chief Election Commission will consult with senior government officials and representatives of recognized political parties in Tamil Nadu.
This visit comes after the Deputy Election Commissioners completed preliminary inspections in the state last week. The CEC’s review is viewed as a significant step ahead of the formal announcement of election dates, which is expected soon.
