New Delhi, August 14: Raipur Lok Sabha MP and senior BJP leader Brijmohan Agrawal met with Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss critical issues related to the expansion of air services and aviation infrastructure in Chhattisgarh.
During the meeting, Agrawal submitted a letter requesting the international status for Raipur’s Swami Vivekananda Airport and sought a special central grant of ₹300 crore for the upgrade of Bilaspur’s Bilasa Devi Kewat Airport.
Agrawal emphasized that Chhattisgarh is rapidly advancing in economic, industrial, and tourism sectors. Therefore, robust air connectivity is essential for the state. Raipur’s Swami Vivekananda Airport serves as a vital hub for passengers not only from Chhattisgarh but also from neighboring regions in Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Currently, international travelers must transit through cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Hyderabad, leading to increased time and costs.
He urged the Union Minister to expedite the process of granting international airport status to Swami Vivekananda Airport and to facilitate the operation of international flights from Raipur. Agrawal stated that this would enhance direct connectivity between Chhattisgarh and the rest of the world, creating new opportunities for trade, industry, investment, tourism, and employment.
Agrawal also highlighted the need for upgrading Bilaspur’s Bilasa Devi Kewat Airport. He requested ₹300 crore in special central grants to elevate the airport from a 3C to a 4C category. This airport is crucial for residents of 14 districts in Chhattisgarh and three neighboring districts in Madhya Pradesh.
He explained that the proposed funds would extend the airport’s runway from the current 1,500 meters to 2,885 meters. Additionally, plans include the construction of a new ATC tower and a modern passenger terminal. These developments will enhance the capacity for larger aircraft operations and significantly improve air connectivity in the Bilaspur region.
Agrawal urged the Union Minister to prioritize both proposals and direct the relevant authorities to expedite the process. He noted that expanding air infrastructure in Chhattisgarh is not just about passenger convenience; it also lays a critical foundation for the state’s overall economic development and new investments.
He concluded that connecting Raipur with international flights and equipping Bilaspur Airport with modern facilities would be significant steps toward the development of Chhattisgarh. He remains committed to strengthening air connectivity in the state with the support of the central government.
