Raipur, February 23: An IED blast in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh injured a member of the Special Task Force (STF) on Monday. This incident occurred during an anti-Naxal operation in the southern region of the district.

The explosion took place in a forested area where security forces were conducting patrols and search operations to curb Maoist activities. Officials reported that a pressure improvised explosive device, planted by Naxalites, detonated as the STF team passed through the area, injuring one member of the elite counter-insurgency unit.

Security personnel at the scene provided immediate first aid to the injured soldier. He was subsequently transported to a nearby medical center and later transferred to a higher-level hospital for advanced treatment.

According to senior police officials, the soldier’s condition is stable, and he remains under close medical supervision, with no reports of life-threatening complications so far.

This blast highlights the ongoing threat posed by Maoist rebels, particularly in Bijapur, which has long been considered a stronghold of left-wing extremism. Naxalites frequently use IEDs to target security convoys, patrols, and road-opening parties involved in anti-insurgency operations. Such devices are often concealed along forest paths or roads used by forces during combing missions.

In response to the explosion, security forces have heightened surveillance in surrounding areas. Teams are thoroughly searching for any additional IEDs or suspicious items that could pose a risk to civilians.

Officials emphasized that operations to establish dominance in the area are ongoing. Increased patrols and monitoring have been implemented to prevent such incidents and maintain pressure on Maoist cadres.

This operation in Bijapur is part of a broader strategy by the state and central governments to eliminate left-wing extremism in Chhattisgarh. In recent months, joint operations involving the STF, District Reserve Guard, and Central Forces have intensified, leading to weapon recoveries, arrests, and surrenders.

Authorities state that the security grid is strengthening, gradually reducing the operational space for Naxal groups. The injured STF personnel is receiving necessary care, and an investigation is underway to locate the IED’s placement and identify those responsible.

The police have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities in remote areas. Local administration is arranging support for the injured soldiers and their families.
