New Delhi, March 8: The central government announced on Sunday that it has released over ₹299 crore under the 15th Finance Commission grant for the financial year 2025-26. This funding aims to strengthen Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) in Assam.
According to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, this amount includes the second installment of the untied grant for the financial year 2025-26, totaling ₹256.60 crore.
All eligible 27 District Panchayats (DPs), 182 Block Panchayats (BPs), and 2,192 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in the state will benefit from this funding.
Additionally, the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Assam—the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC)—will also receive grants.
Furthermore, the central government has released ₹42.70 crore from the withheld amount of the first installment of the untied grant for the financial year 2025-26 to these three ADCs after they were declared eligible.
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Water Resources (Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation), recommends the release of the 15th Finance Commission grants to states for PRIs and RLBs. These funds are subsequently disbursed by the Ministry of Finance.
The allocated grants are recommended and released in two installments during the financial year.
According to the ministry, the untied grants will be utilized by PRIs and RLBs for location-specific needs under the 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution, excluding salaries and other establishment costs.
These grants can be used for basic services, such as maintaining sanitation and achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, which includes managing and treating household waste, human excreta, and sludge.
The funds can also be allocated for drinking water supply, rainwater harvesting, and water recycling.
