New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the release of Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated film ‘Jan Nayakan’ has intensified. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, seeking to prevent any unilateral or adverse orders until the board’s views are heard.
This move follows the recent order by the Madras High Court’s Division Bench, which overturned a single judge’s directive that instructed the CBFC to grant the film a UA (16+) certificate.
Originally scheduled for release on January 9 during the Pongal festival, ‘Jan Nayakan’ faced delays as the CBFC withheld certification. Initially, the board had agreed to issue a UA certificate with some cuts but later referred the film to the Revising Committee after receiving complaints. The producers approached the Madras High Court, accusing the board of unnecessary delays.
On January 9, the court directed the CBFC to issue the UA certificate and allowed the producers to amend their petition. Meanwhile, the producers challenged the Division Bench’s interim stay by approaching the Supreme Court. However, on January 15, the Supreme Court declined to intervene and asked the Madras High Court to decide by January 20.
The film was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025 by KVN Productions. During its initial review, the board recommended cuts to certain scenes and muting some dialogues. The producers complied with these suggestions and resubmitted the film for certification.
‘Jan Nayakan’ is considered Thalapathy Vijay’s last film before his full-time entry into politics. The film features prominent actors such as Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Prakash Raj in key roles.
The CBFC maintains that it has the authority to make decisions based on all complaints and regulations, while the producers view the certification delay as unjust.
