Mumbai, May 19: The acclaimed social satire film ‘Hindi Medium’ has reached its nine-year milestone since its release. On this special occasion, the makers took to social media to reminisce about the film’s impact.
Madok Films shared a popular video clip featuring the late actor Irrfan Khan, where he critiques the arbitrary nature of private schools and their pretentiousness. The post included the caption, “The language of education: not Hindi or English, but just a feeling.”
Released in 2017, ‘Hindi Medium’ highlights a harsh reality in society where speaking English is often seen as a measure of one’s capability. The film narrates the story of a couple striving to secure admission for their daughter in a prestigious English medium school, facing numerous challenges and deceit along the way.
The plot revolves around Raj (Irrfan Khan), a businessman residing in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, and his wife Meeta (Saba Qamar). Meeta aspires for their daughter, Piya, to attend the city’s most elite and expensive English medium school, hoping to elevate their social status.
In their quest, they attempt to change their ways but ultimately fail. They resort to a desperate act of pretending to be poor to secure admission under a ‘poor quota,’ even moving into slums. This journey leads them to meet a genuinely impoverished individual (Deepak Dobriyal), through whom they discover the true meaning of life and education.
