Kolkata, April 2 : The CBI, probing the cattle smuggling case, on Saturday summoned ruling TMC’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal to appear before the investigating officials at 11 am on April 6 at Nizam palace in the city. Sources said the Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the cattle smuggling scam of several hundreds crores of rupees, in an email summoned the TMC heavyweight to be present at its city headquarters. This is the fifth summon notice from CBI to the powerful politician, Mondal, who has already skipped appearance to the federal probe agency on four occasions citing different pleas. His application to Calcutta high court against the CBI summon was rejected recently. A division bench of Calcutta High Court on March 29 upheld its single bench order, which refused to grant TMC’s Birbhum district president’s plea for protection against arrest in the cattle smuggling case. The division bench headed by chief justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj orally observed that there was no error in the order of the single bench. Single bench justice Rajasekhar Mantha had dismissed the plea of Mondal after noting that he had travelled outside Bolpur on several occasions and that his aliments as examined by the Medical Board are not that serious that would requirement confinement to his home.
