CBI Arrests UP Rural Bank Branch Manager for Taking Bribe in Basti

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken strict action against corruption in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, by arresting a branch manager of the Uttar Pradesh Rural Bank.

The CBI apprehended the branch manager of the Berata branch (Makhaura Dham) along with a private individual, who works as a peon in the bank, while accepting a bribe of ₹10,000. Both have been taken into custody and will be produced in court.

The case was registered on January 5 following a complaint from a borrower. The complainant had obtained a loan of ₹5 lakh under the Chief Minister’s Yuva Udyami Yojana. Although the loan was approved and an initial installment of ₹2.72 lakh was disbursed, the branch manager demanded a bribe of ₹15,000 through the private individual to release the remaining amount. After negotiation, the bribe amount was settled at ₹10,000.

Upon receiving the complaint, the CBI initiated an investigation and laid a trap on January 6. The complainant paid the agreed bribe amount to the accused, after which the CBI team immediately arrested them on the spot. This action was taken under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Authorities say this move by the CBI will serve as a warning to other bank employees. The investigation is ongoing, and a charge sheet is expected to be filed soon. This marks the first significant CBI crackdown in Basti district and is seen as a vital step towards ensuring transparency in rural banking operations.
