New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Tanmay Mirdha, an accused in a chit fund scam involving more than ₹2 crore. The arrest was made on January 29 in Brahmanagar, Nadia district of West Bengal.
The case was registered by the CBI on June 23, 2020, following directions from the Supreme Court. The court had ordered a detailed probe into chit fund companies operating in West Bengal and Odisha.
During the investigation, the agency found that Tanmay Mirdha was a director of Express Cultivation Limited, Kolkata. Along with his associates, he collected large sums of money from the public under the pretext of investment.
The accused reportedly raised around ₹2.1 crore from investors by promising attractive returns. However, the funds were misused, and investors neither received returns on time nor got back their principal amounts, causing significant financial losses.
After completing a detailed investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet in this case on February 4, 2022. Tanmay Mirdha remained absconding during the probe, leading the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Kolkata to issue an arrest warrant against him.
Following continuous field verification, technical inputs, and intelligence, the CBI traced the accused’s location and arrested him on January 29. Post-arrest, he will be produced before the court and may be taken on remand for further investigation.
A CBI official emphasized that no accused involved in chit fund scams will be spared. Prompt action will be taken against all those found guilty. The statement of Tanmay Mirdha is expected to reveal the extent of involvement and how public money was collected.
