New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sarit Vij, also known as Sharat Kumar Vij, a declared offender in a customs fraud case involving ₹58 lakh. The agency announced the arrest on Thursday, also revealing that a ₹10,000 reward was offered for information leading to his capture.
Background of the Case
The CBI registered the case on 1 June 1999 against Joseph Kuok, the then superintendent of the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Tughlakabad, Delhi, and others for allegedly defrauding the Customs Department of nearly ₹58 lakh. Investigations revealed Sarit Vij’s involvement, who was a partner in the firm Messrs PS International. The firm had reportedly filed fake duty drawback claims amounting to around ₹19 lakh, cheating the customs department.
Following the investigation, a chargesheet was filed against Sarit Vij and other co-accused. However, Vij failed to appear in court after the chargesheet submission in 2003 and remained absconding throughout the trial period despite the agency’s persistent efforts to locate him.
Efforts to Locate and Arrest
After completing all legal procedures, the court declared Sarit Vij a fugitive on 30 January 2004. A reward of ₹10,000 was announced for information regarding his whereabouts. Further investigation and ground verification revealed that he had changed his identity to Sarat Kumar Vij and was residing in Noida.
The CBI discovered that Vij had obtained new identity documents including PAN card, Aadhaar card, and passport under the changed name to evade law enforcement agencies. Using technical analysis and a carefully planned operation, the agency successfully arrested him from his residence in Noida on Wednesday, 7 January 2026.
CBI’s Commitment to Tackling Fraud
The CBI continues to actively investigate fraud cases, ensuring that government officials and private individuals involved in such crimes face strict punishments including imprisonment and heavy fines. This arrest reinforces the agency’s dedication to upholding the law and delivering justice.
