Captain Shreyas Iyer Reflects on Indias Defeat to New Zealand in Fifth T20 Match

After Indias loss to New Zealand, captain Shreyas Iyer emphasizes the need for improvement in bowling and fielding.

Hamilton, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : India faced a disappointing defeat against New Zealand in the fifth T20 match, losing by seven wickets in Hamilton on November 1. Chasing a target of 192 runs, New Zealand achieved the goal with relative ease, losing only three wickets in the process.

Post-match, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer expressed that the team needs to enhance its fielding, which he identified as a crucial area for improvement. He remarked, “To be honest, it was achievable. Given the start we had in the middle overs and the momentum created by Ishan and myself, we could have performed better. However, we lost wickets consistently, which put pressure on the new batsmen. Playing on this pitch was challenging, especially when the ball was seaming and occasionally skidding off the surface.”

Iyer noted that both he and Tilak Varma fell victim to similar dismissals, highlighting the difficulties posed by the pitch. He considered reaching 191 runs a decent score under the circumstances.

Looking ahead, Iyer emphasized the importance of learning from this experience. “I believe we could have been better in our bowling and fielding. We were a bit careless, but this was a valuable learning opportunity. Playing in New Zealand and adapting to different conditions is a great experience,” he stated.

Addressing the possibility of experimenting with the playing XI in the last two T20 matches, Iyer said, “Absolutely, the first three matches gave us a solid rhythm. In the final two matches, we wanted to experiment and challenge ourselves a bit more. Today was the right opportunity for that. Clearly, we didn’t meet expectations, but it was a fantastic learning experience.”

Iyer reiterated the need to improve fielding, acknowledging the challenges of playing in bright conditions. He added, “This is an aspect of the game where we need to improve. However, playing under such bright lights and clear skies is not something we often encounter in India. Nonetheless, it has been a valuable learning experience.”
